Case Study: Aspen Seed Collection For Yukon Fuel Breaks

Project Dates: 2025-2027

Scope of Services: Seed Collection, Seed Processing, Seed Bank, Community Outreach

Project Details:
YSR is honoured to lead a three-year project to collect 6000 grams of Trembling Aspen seed for the YG Wildland Wildfire Fuel Break Projects. These seeds will be enough to grow thousands of saplings for fuel breaks that help protect Yukon communities from wildfires. Trembling Aspen is naturally more fire-resistant than other species and having it woven into strategic corridors, these trees can slow a fast-moving blaze and give firefighters precious time to act.

During the first season, our field crews scouted dozens of collection locations in the Yukon Plateau ecoregions and harvested catkins bursting with viable seed. The work yielded roughly one-third of the project’s overall target, a promising start that reflects the dedication of our team.

To keep pace with the collection goals, YSR has expanded its production capacity—investing in specialized processing equipment, upgraded facilities, and additional hiring for staff and community volunteers. Each step, from field collection to lab processing, follows rigorous protocols that safeguard seed viability and health.

Ultimately, this effort is about more than meeting a contract deliverable; it’s about nurturing healthy forests, strengthening community resilience, and stewarding the land for future generations. We look forward to sharing continued progress as the project advances.
